Ten Years in the Making : Shaping a Home Through the City’s Layers of Time

If you have lived in Tainan, you would know that within its narrow alleyways, old houses are constantly being dismantled or renovated. Before they disappear, traces of the past remain.

The homeowner, Mr. Lin (Jim), began salvaging materials from these sites. He recovered Taiwanese cypress columns and beams, doors and window frames removed from retired houses, along with discarded hardware, lamps, and historic Dutch-style bricks. These elements became the foundation of the house, built to grow with time.

From the outset, the project was shaped by this material strategy. The living room roof structure and all openings were crafted from timber reclaimed from various locations. Rather than forcing these pieces into a standardized system, the architecture adapted. Openings, proportions, and construction details were adjusted to fit the dimensions and traces of each element, while meeting the needs of a family of five.

Within the 145-square-meter residence, a vertical void and a central courtyard organize the plan. The void serves as the shared center of family life, maintaining visual and acoustic continuity between floors. Red bricks lining the courtyard, gathered from local alleyways, follow proportions associated with Tainan’s early Dutch-era masonry, reflecting the layered history of the city.

Placed within this new structure, reclaimed windows, doors, and timbers soften the sharp edges of newness. Materials from different eras now coexist, changing with daily use and forming new memories over time.

A few days ago, an elder called to say that an old corporate office building was being demolished. I went to take a look.

Nearly two hundred cypress drawers were salvaged. After two weeks of sorting and dismantling, more than six hundred clean cypress boards were recovered.

Nails, copper tacks, locks, and metal rings were removed and sorted one by one. They will be reused in next year’s house.

Looking forward.

“…Planned to stay home and do nothing. Somehow got dragged out — walk, afternoon tea, 180° ocean view. Thought that would be the end of it. Drive home, good mood.

Then came the cherry on top.On the provincial road, a pile of demolition scraps flashed past. Told myself to ignore it.

My wife smiled and said, ‘If you want it, turn back now. Don’t regret it later and race back.’Already a kilometer ahead. Still couldn’t let it go. Sharp U-turn. Back to ground zero.On the way home, I was smiling the whole time — like I had a coat hanger in my mouth.”

The craftsman confirmed that both the counterweight windows and the paired side windows required 2mm reclaimed glass to control weight. The panes were fixed with triangular cypress glazing beads.

Each sheet of glass was removed and cleaned individually. Nearly two weeks were spent removing old paint, mineral stains, and surface residue. Before installation, the glass was wiped with kerosene.

Fabricating the cypress glazing beads proved the most difficult part. Fortunately, Master Chang from Ziguan made a custom jig to produce them. After painting, they were handed over to the glazier for installation, allowing the process to be completed.

In terms of material use, careful attention was needed to reconcile existing components with the new structural system. Restoring old windows and doors, stripping paint, repairing details, and adjusting reclaimed pieces to fit new spatial dimensions each demanded patience and refinement.

Spatially, even when family members are on different floors, they remain connected through the interior void, the courtyard, and the circulation that links the house vertically.

In construction, the house brought traditional craftsmanship back into everyday life. Techniques mastered by carpenters and metalworkers — methods often seen in heritage restoration — were reintroduced into the building process and became integral to the character of the house.
