For the YODEX 2024 Exhibition, we turn the theme "Beyond Sustainability" into action by borrowing materials like wood, bricks, and metal pipes.
These materials, shaped by their properties and economic factors, are repurposed for the exhibition using detachable structures and stacking methods to ensure they can be returned for recycling.
For example, red bricks are shipped in pallets. We stack and arrange these pallets into walls, tabletops, and seats, shaping the exhibition space. The holes at the bottom of the pallets, designed for forklift forks, are used to insert wooden beams as supports for display panels.
Exhibit tables and display panels are made from standard-sized boards like '3x6' and '4x8.' Utilizing the stability of their triangular structure, holes are drilled at the top, and the pieces are temporarily assembled and secured with Velcro. These are mounted on bases made from raw timber bundles borrowed from a sawmill, without additional gluing or cutting, to maximize reuse potential.
In the lounge area, chairs are created by stacking metal tubes used for making table legs to seat height, temporarily secured with screws. Chair cushions are made from foam scraps, resulting in random colors that reflect the industry's current state. At the exhibition, people sit or lean on the furniture, imagining that a table might have once dreamed of being a chair.
During takedown, typical exhibition booths generate a staggering amount of wood waste. However, all exhibit structures from ‘The Borrowing Project’ for this exhibition can be dismantled afterward and returned to construction sites, sawmills, and furniture factories for recycling and reuse.
When materials are 'borrowed,' we use them more thoughtfully and consider their future.
